Swiss Elopement Photography: A Breathtaking Gallery from Zermatt
Welcome to Zermatt, Switzerland, where the Matterhorn mountain towers over the picturesque alpine village. As a destination wedding photographer, I am constantly on the lookout for stunning locations to capture intimate moments between couples. Zermatt is one of my favorite places to shoot in Europe, not only because of its breathtaking scenery but also because of the many outdoor activities it offers, such as hiking, snowboarding, and mountain biking.
On this particular shoot, I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful elopement with a couple from the US. We started the day with a family shoot, including the couple’s baby and grandparents. It was heartwarming to see the entire family together in such a stunning location. The Kirchbrücke bridge provided the perfect backdrop for the shoot, with the Matterhorn looming in the distance.
After the family shoot, we headed to Gornergrat viewpoint with the Gornergrat bahn train. Gornergrat is the perfect spot to capture the grandeur of the Matterhorn and the surrounding peaks. The train ride was an experience in itself, as we passed through beautiful mountain landscapes and quaint Swiss villages.
However, reaching Zermatt can be a logistical challenge, especially when organizing a shoot. The village is car-free, so visitors must park their cars in a nearby town and take the train into Zermatt. The train timetable must be carefully considered, as the last train leaves Zermatt relatively early in the evening. Similarly, the lifts close quite early, so it’s important to plan the shoot accordingly.
This was actually my second elopement in Zermatt, and I hope to return soon, especially during the summer months when the village is bustling with activity. While I cannot share images from a previous wedding I shot in Switzerland due to a non-disclosure agreement, I can say that Switzerland is a truly magical place, with endless opportunities for stunning photography.
If you’re considering an elopement or a wedding in Switzerland, Zermatt is definitely worth considering. The natural beauty of the area and the range of outdoor activities make it a unique and memorable destination for any couple. I look forward to capturing more unforgettable moments in this beautiful part of the world.
Gornergrat Hotel
The Gornergrat hotel is not only a stunning architectural masterpiece, but it’s also a remarkable feat of engineering. Located at the top of Gornergrat mountain, it’s the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,170 feet). The hotel offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the iconic Matterhorn.
To reach the hotel, visitors must take the Gornergrat Bahn train, which is a marvel of engineering in its own right. The train journey takes about 33 minutes from Zermatt to the top of Gornergrat, and it’s an experience in itself. The train track covers a distance of 9.3 kilometers (5.8 miles), with an incline of up to 20 degrees. The train is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology to ensure safety and comfort for the passengers.
The Gornergrat hotel was built in 1898 and has undergone several renovations over the years to keep up with modern standards. It has 22 rooms, a restaurant, and a bar, all of which offer guests an unforgettable experience. Spending a night at the Gornergrat hotel is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Swiss Alps, surrounded by nature and tranquility.
In addition to the hotel, the Gornergrat summit is also home to a range of other attractions, including an observatory, a planetarium, and several hiking trails. It’s an ideal destination for anyone who loves outdoor activities and wants to experience the natural beauty of Switzerland.
At the top of Gornergrat, the altitude made for some incredibly strong winds, which added a bit of extra drama to the photos. But luckily, we were blessed with a clear and sunny day, and the couple was well prepared with their wedding attire, even though they had to remove their jackets for the photos. It was truly an unforgettable experience to capture their love against the stunning backdrop of the Swiss Alps, and the breathtaking views from the top of Gornergrat made for an incredible setting for the shoot. Despite the logistical challenges of organizing a shoot in such a remote location with strict train schedules and lift closures, everything came together perfectly and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
In conclusion, Zermatt truly is a remarkable location for any kind of photo shoot, be it for weddings, elopements, or family portraits. The stunning views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding Alps make for an unforgettable backdrop that will take your breath away. And while the logistics of organizing a photo shoot in Zermatt can be challenging, the payoff is well worth it.
